Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century
- Has basic skills with productivity software.
- Uses email for communication every day.
- Uses the Internet for research, tasks and information.
Year One - 2009-2010 - 62 Hours (approximate)
Learn how to apply:
- Instructional strategies identified in Classroom Instruction That Works, (Marzano et al., 2001).
- Lesson design framework identified in Understanding by Design (UbD).
Learn how to operate:
- Digital technologies - computers, document cameras and interactive whiteboards - that support UbD lesson design and the Marzano instructional strategies.
Time commitment:
- 3 days in October, 2009.
- 2 days in January or February, 2010.
- 1 day in late June of 2010.
The remaining hours of professional development take place online.
- Learn how to operate a wireless response system and leverage online resources that support teaching and learning.
We'll determine the number of hours, in each course delivery format, at the end of TL21's first year.
- $1200 per participant for year one due no later than September 18, 2009.
- We'll bill your district for year two - approximately $650 - in early fall, 2010.

No Funding? Apply
for a TL21 Grant in 2010.
TL21 exists as a state-funded grant program.
Grant recipients receive $7,600 to pay for the hardware, software and materials

Mandatory Hardware,
Software, Connectivity & Materials
Up and running by the first day of training
in October 2009:
- In your classroom - wireless laptop with Web cam and business productivity suite (word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software).
- At home or in an alternate location - access to a high speed Internet connection for evening and weekend study.
Two textbooks in hand by the first day of training in October 2009:
- Classroom Instruction That Works, by Robert Marzano, Debra Pickering and Jane Pollock.
- Understanding by Design Professional Development Workbook, by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins.
Up and running by December 1, 2009:
- Data projector
- Document camera with video and audio capture (AverMedia CP300, AverMedia 300 AFPlus, AverMedia SPC300, Lumens DC210 Ladybug, Lumens DC260).
- Whiteboard or Interactive Slate (SmartBoard, Promethean ActivBoard, Hitachi FXDUO, PolyVision eno, Mobi slate, or other board or wireless slate solution).
- EasiTeach software for interactive board or slate.
Up and running by September 1, 2010
- Classroom RF response system (approximate cost $1,700-$2,000). We'll let you know later about vendors and model specifications.
Commitment - Participant
Register for the TL21 PD program and you agree
to these terms and conditions:
- Participate fully in the TL21 program from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011.
- Attend all training sessions.
- Participate actively in all online activities.
- Apply the instructional strategies and technology integration techniques you learn through the TL21 program to your classroom lessons.
- Use additional hours, beyond the time spent in TL21 training, to plan, and evaluate the lesson design principles and instructional strategies you learn during TL21 PD sessions.
Commitment - Principal
If an educator on your staff registers for the
TL21 PD program, you agree to these terms and conditions:
- Attendance support for all the required professional development sessions and online learning modules.
- Installation support - make sure the teacher has all the required hardware and software up and running in their classroom by the TL21 program deadlines, detailed above.
- Timely technical and network support during the course of the program.
- Internet access in the classroom for the TL21 participant, and his or her students.
