Google SketchUp Pro - FREE lab licenses for Washington K-12 schools

Posted on Friday, October 2, 2009

Google is offering free educational lab licenses for SketchUp Pro. The offer is open to all Washington state schools and districts that make use of the licensing program set up with OSPI.

Sketchup Pro is a popular 3D modeling software that K-12 teachers use to strengthen core curricula with realistic visualizations that scale and animate quickly and easily. Google recommends a second free download of Google Earth, which makes it possible to model real-world buildings and sites, then locate them geographically.

Contact your regional ETSC Director or Dennis Small (dennis.small@k12.wa.us) for licensing information.

Educational Technology Standards are now available

Posted on Thursday, January 29, 2009

The new Educational Technology Standards are now available on the Grade Level Standards & Resources website at http://standards.ospi.k12.wa.us/.  These standards contain two EALRs:

INTEGRATION

Students use technology within all content areas to collaborate, communicate, generate innovative ideas, investigate and solve problems.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Students demonstrate a clear understanding of technology systems and operations and practice safe, legal and ethical behavior.

The two EALRs are designed to reach across the digital divide among K-12 schools as they help prepare our students to live and work in a digital society. These new standards work compatibly, and practically, within the current teaching and learning environment.

Each standard is accompanied by realistic basic classroom activities that use very little technology – an internet connection and a PC--equipment we know is available in 99%+ of state classrooms, as well as activities well-suited to 21st century learning environments in which technology is abundant.

The new standards integrate the excellent work already established at the national level and are congruent with the multiple iterations of tech standards already in place across Washington state school districts. The new standards set the bar for operational proficiency and challenge teachers and students to use technology across all the core subjects.

Technology should be seen as a natural extension and necessary part of the lesson to support learning in all other subject areas”. Educational Technology Standards Development Team, January, 2008

The Grade Level Standards & Resources website has become a main portal from which educators, colleges and universities, educational organizations, parents, and students access the standards.

Thus the wax museum project was born. Eric Franz, a special education teacher and participant in the Peer Coaching program, has been the leader of this project since its inception.
